We are both having a typical week at work. The weather is still hot, but not as bad as it was last week – it only got up to 98° out today. Tonight I will continue to put small stuff away in the RV in preparation for our departure to Edisto Beach, SC on Thursday evening. We hope to get on the road by 6:00pm, or earlier if possible.
Tomorrow night I will go grocery shopping and spend time cleaning and getting the motor home ready to go.
Over the weekend we went out and watched the latest Harry Potter Movie – The Order of the Phoenix. I enjoyed the movie – the special effects are really well done – so seamless that it is sometimes difficult to tell if something is real, or was done with a computer. I liked seeing all of the old oil lamps in various scenes and a stylized antique radio in Harry’s room… I don’t have much interest in reading the Harry Potter books, but the movies are fun enough to watch….
John has been studying hard for the General Ham Radio exam he will be taking at the end of the month. He is reading the ARRL book and using the Ham Test Online website to go over the questions. The nice thing about the ham radio exams is that there is a published question pool that the questions are drawn from – so you can drill yourself with the actual questions. Out of several hundred questions, the real exam will contain 35 of them… so you can’t really memorize all of the questions – you really need to study and learn the material.
I’m really looking forward to having a three day weekend. I’m not exactly sure what we will be doing at Edisto Beach, SC, but I hope to get some geocaching in and walk around the beach. I also want to try and make some long distance ham radio contacts. Being close to the ocean may make some interesting contrasts possible. Perhaps we can have John’s friend Jason over to check out our “ham shack” and work the air waves together.
Over the weekend I purchased a used “Sega Game Gear” in working condition, carry case and two games for $20.00. The Game Gear was released in 1990 and its biggest claim to fame was the “Sonic the Hedgehog” games. It was in direct competition with the old black and white Nintendo Game Boy and pretty much lost. The Game Gear was much larger to hold and only had 5 hours of battery life – the Game Boy was smaller and had 20+ hour battery life….
I have been having fun playing “Streets of Rage II” on the Game Gear – it is a good old button smashing fighting game. The action reminds me of a Teenage Mutant Turtles game I played on the old black and white game boy. The graphics are decent – about on par with the original Nintendo or Atari 5200…. Now I will be on the lookout for some more games for it at the flea markets….
